Fernando Kowacs is Professor of Neurology at Universidade Federal de Ciências da Saude de Porto Alegre and coordinates the headache sector at the Neurology and Neurosurgery Service of Moinhos de Vento Hospital, located in Porto Alegre, at the extreme south of Brazil. He received his medical degree at the Faculty of Medicine of Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), from which he was also awarded his Masters Degree in Medicine and his PhD. He is a certified neurologist, having completed his training at the Hospital de Clinicas de Porto Alegre. His interest in the headache field started in the 1990s, when he established one of the few university hospital headache outpatient clinics in Brazil at that time. Professor Kowacs complemented his headache training with Professor Peter Goadsby and Dr. Holger Kaube during a year at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square, London, UK.
Professor Kowacs has been the coordinator of the Headache Scientific Department of the Brazilian Academy of Neurology since 2016, and he has been actively involved with educational and scientific activities at the Brazilian Headache Society where he is leading the implementation of the Brazilian Headache Registry (REBRACEF).
